For any Letterkenny fans out there, you might be familiar with the Super Soft Birthday Party concept. For those who have no idea what I’m rambling on about here’s a quick breakdown of Letterkenny (that you should definitely watch right now):

Letterkenny is a Canadian show about a small town of 5,000 people. Each group of characters is in their own little clique much like high school (jocks, rednecks, goth kids, etc.). Only these characters are out of school and in their twenties/early thirties. The show is basically a comedic slice of life series where one of the episodes is about the main group (the “hicks”) throwing a birthday party for one of their friends.

It’s tradition to throw this friend a Super Soft Birthday Party like the ones his mom threw him as a kid. These parties included: tiaras, feather boas, cupcakes, pink everything, and a unicorn. My boyfriend and I love this show and are on our 2nd re-watch actually. Since my boyfriend’s birthday was coming up soon I thought it would be fun to throw him a mini version of it this year!

You have a lot of creative freedom when throwing a Super Soft Birthday Party, but these are the basics:

  1. Kids birthday plates & napkins

  2. Matching tablecloth

  3. Tiara for the birthday person

  4. A feathered boa or lei

  5. A pinata

  6. Desserts

  7. Happy Birthday banner

In the show the theme is more feminine, but you could go for any kid’s birthday theme. If they want Pokemon plates and a Pikachu pinata - go for it! Definitely tailor it for the birthday person!

I knew my boyfriend would find humor in pink unicorns so I went that route. I got him unicorn plates, napkins, and tablecloth as well as a unicorn pinata. I also wrapped his presents in a white and pink bag that had cupcakes on it and pink tissue paper to match everything else. Since I couldn’t find a feathered boa, I went with a lei, which he seemed to enjoy.

I also got a few party favors on a whim to make it more fun and nostalgic. I got light up bouncy balls to put into the pinata (along with actual candy, I’m not a monster) and glow sticks. I found my materials at Target in the party section. For favors, they also had packs of slime, sticky hands, kazoos, and party horns. Each pack was about $2-$3 so you could easily mix and match. Since we weren’t going to have a huge guest list due to the situation*, I opted to not get too many. Otherwise, I would have grabbed a few more to pass out.

Target had a few themes you could go with (mermaid, unicorn, Pokemon, the movie Cars for some reason). You could also check out Dollar Tree or Five Below for more selection and cheaper options. I would say overall, I didn’t spend more than $25 on this set-up (pinatas are expensive you guys).

If I was throwing a full-on soft birthday party I would add the following:

  • Nostalgic playlist (a lot of late 90's/early 2000's songs for us, but anything that brings you back to your childhood).

  • Balloons. Everywhere.

  • More desserts. We just had the cake I had made, but for a full guest list I’d have cookies, cupcakes, and ice cream (those little vanilla ones that come in a cup with the strawberry/chocolate swirls - if you had any party in the early 2000s, you know what I’m talking about)!

  • Pizza (remember when you were a kid and after reading 5 books over the summer you got a sweet, sweet pizza party?)

  • Cocktails/Mocktails - in the show they have a variety of colorful, fruity cocktails. For a larger crowd it might be fun to try to recreate them. If you want to go the non-alcoholic route you could make mocktail versions. You could also keep going down the nostalgic path and grab a pack of Capri Sun/Kool-aide or make your own fruit punch!

  • Party Games. You could go with traditional party games (pin the tail on the donkey for example) or break out board and card games!

All in all, I think this is a great party theme if you want to indulge yourself in nostalgia and do something a bit different. It’s also an easy, inexpensive way to spruce up someone’s birthday if you want to do something a little extra special!
