Cozy Bedroom

For me, my bedroom has always been my quiet space. I think this stems from growing up and having your room be the one place in the house that was yours. You chose the decor, the colors, the layout. This was your space to design and express yourself.

Even though I can decorate my apartment however I want since I'm a grown woman, I still see my bedroom as a space to disappear to after a long day. I want it to be as cozy as possible and feel like the perfect space to mediate and unwind in after work, chores, and general adulthood.

Here's what I've done with my recent space:

I first want to note that this didn't come together in a day or immediately after moving in. I've been living in my apartment for a year now and just recently got it put together the way I wanted after slowly collected pieces and playing around with decor.

Tips on how to get the cozy aesthetic:

  1. Fairy Lights - these really do make a difference. I don't like harsh lighting in rooms and I enjoy a sort of dimmed lighting. I personally like framing windows with them, but in my old apartment I had them aligning the ceiling and draping down a bit. I say work with your layout and play around a bit, but if you have the windows that's always a good starting place for string lights.

  2. Warm colors - in my old apartment I had a pink/purple/green bohemian styled comforter, which I still have because I love it, but I do prefer the darker bedding here. Finding any colors that feel warm to you is a good start. You can still add pops of color like I did with the rug, but be mindful of the shades you're choosing.

  3. Plants - I used to not have any plants until I moved in with my boyfriend who's obsessed with them (and good with them too, if it were just me they'd all be half-dead by now). Real or fake, they do make a difference in your space. I feel like they add something to the room that makes you feel more hidden and safe. It's hard to explain.

  4. Tapestries - I'm personally on a tapestry kick right now, but I like them because they take up a lot of wall space. I used to go heavy with posters, but sometimes they made my walls feel too crowded. I like the tapestries because they can act like wallpaper or a poster and give the room an extra bit of color without being too overwhelming. Since I live in an apartment and can't pain the walls, these help me cover the white space and add some warmth to the room.

  5. Anything that brings you comfort - think of things that make you feel warm, safe, and happy. We have a little aquarium in the room now, which I like because water is calming to me and I've always felt the best around ponds, rivers, and oceans. I also like having a TV in the room because I can play lofi music in the background or watch a comfort show/movie.

I love the way my bedroom is set up currently, but I still like to play around with it and look for other elements to bring in. These are just tips for how I've created my space, but experiment with colors and decor to see what you like best! Also, don't get discouraged if it doesn't look like your dream room right away. Give yourself time to find the right furniture and decor!
