Cozy Balcony

One of my recurring daydreams has always been to wake up on a crisp morning and pour a hot cup of coffee before stepping onto my balcony to enjoy a peaceful morning. This balcony would be my safe haven. Here time wouldn’t feel as pressing.

Well, I’m happy to say that after years of apartment living I finally have my balcony! We moved into our new apartment in late August of last year so while we were able to enjoy some gorgeous October days out there, we didn’t have much time to truly make it feel like home.

As the weather started to warm up again and with some of the free time I was given in 2020 (whether you want to look at that as good or bad), I finally was able to put some care into my little daydream!

When we started we had one loveseat and 1 beige cushion (the other mysteriously vanished during the move) and one glass table. My first step was replacing the cushions and finding a more vibrant color. I settled on a deep blue, which I knew would tie in well with some pillows I already had on hand. I also knew that I always imagined lights (as you’ll see from my other rooms, I’m a little obsessed with cozy, white lights). We also found a rug with rubber-like material to withstand all types of weather the Midwest tends to bring.

Although, what I believe truly brought this balcony to life was the garden we decided to start. I can’t take credit for this, it was definitely all done by my boyfriend. He had wanted a balcony garden for a while and what started out as just a few plants and sunflowers in pots, has now grown into vines intertwining through the balcony bars and creating a secret garden aesthetic.

Most nights I like to wait until dark just to turn on those lights and enjoy the solitude and cozy feeling we’ve been able to create here. It’s perfect for morning coffee, an afternoon break, and a date night under the stars.

While an apartment is never quite private, I feel like we’ve managed to create something of a quiet space for those lazy weekend mornings or hectic days when you just need a break from the chaos and restlessness of the world.

What area of your home is your safe haven?
